The Arch

There was a covered up arch found in the Jail hall. We had an assignment to transfer the arch shape to a template so we could keep it as a reference. We started by finding the midpoint of the arch and transferring that line to the ground. We made a life size “compass” by having a scribe on one end and a pencil on the other end marking the arch. To be able to extend the string line far enough to mimic the arch, we had to shift our line over a few feet and base it off of that new line. We were then able to mark the other endpoint and start guessing where the center point would be for the arch. After many guesses we found how far back it was and we marked that point and drew the arch on the floor with a scribe and on a big board that we were able to cut out a template to keep for reference.

Here is a drawing showing how the template we cut out matches the template we transferred to the floor.

Here is the template we cut out and the scribe marks on the ground. We only had to make a template of half of the arch since its symmetrical and it matches the other side.

My classmates and I lining up the template to the wall to scribe a perfect outline of the arch on the new plaster wall.

My classmates and I snapping a chalk line on the floor to represents the top of the ceiling.
